Creative Tilt/Shift Photography Experiments on Phu Quoc Island
It’s strange... For the New Year, I made myself a small gift and bought a toy ARAX 80mm Tilt/Shift lens with shift and tilt for 35mm cameras.
On the camera it looks as if someone is about to say: “Uncle-uncle, your camera is broken!”
I don’t have time to work on it in full yet. But the shots taken with it during the first tests, when I bought it, caused me slight bewilderment in its pattern and oddities — with its depth of field of the depicted space and, in fact, the directions of this very depth.
The photos look quite strange, somehow unreal. I love surrealism, so I think we will become friends.
The multi-coated ARAX 80mm Tilt/Shift lens with shift (11mm) and tilt (8 degrees) allows you to move and tilt the optical axis of the lens. Tilt or shift can be applied separately or in combination. In addition, the entire lens unit can rotate 360 degrees, rotating the direction of corrections.
This makes it possible to correct optical distortions and create an infinite number of optical effects at the hardware level, which is much more effective than software. Distortion correction is absolutely necessary when shooting interiors and architecture. And here on Phu Quoc Island, where modern villas, boutique resorts and luxury hotels are full of bold architectural details, such a lens opens incredible opportunities for interior and real estate photography.
But beyond technical correction, I think I’ll find a more fun and creative use for it.
On the beaches of Phu Quoc, with palm silhouettes and tropical light, such surreal tilt-shift effects can turn an ordinary wedding photo session into an artistic visual story. As soon as I have some free time, I’ll create something with this lens and definitely share the results.
In the meantime, watch my favorite video made with a Tilt/Shift lens — it’s a great example of how unusual optics can shape the world around us.
📌 I’ll help you turn bold visions into stunning creative photographs, whether it’s a symbolic wedding on the beach, an individual portrait shoot, or an interior session for your villa here in Phu Quoc.
