A MONK PHOTOGRAPHING THE SEA

How to turn a random shot into a good photo

With the right intention and skill, even a spontaneous moment can turn into a powerful photograph. Let me show you one such example — and the story behind it.

This is the photo we'll be talking about.

The story behind this photo is quite simple. Early in the morning, the bride and groom and I were standing under an awning, waiting for our speedboat. The first photo (linked below) is a portrait of the client under that awning. At one point, I saw a monk photographing the sunrise and the speedboats approaching the horizon. I threw the camera up and practically dived into the depths to take this shot. A man and a woman accompanying the monk were included in the frame.

Then the three of them looked at the photo, smiling, while staring into the monk's camera. Everyone seemed pleased with the result. Incidentally, I discovered he was using a Casio camera. I had neither the time nor the opportunity to take a good shot without strangers interrupting the mood.

When I got home, I spent a few hours in Photoshop and took a picture like this. I created the mood of calm, serenity, and stillness that this picture is meant to convey. I think I've done it. That's it for today.

Happy photography, no matter the circumstances. :)

In this article, you can read about how I lived among the monks in the mountains of Vietnam.

Some monks smoke cigarettes, drink Coca-Cola, and sometimes even watch movies on their laptops.
