Family Photoshoot on Phu Quoc Island

Tips from a local photographer in Phu Quoc

I'd like to share with you a few perhaps obvious tips from my experience as a family photographer.

To ensure a family photo shoot is enjoyable for everyone, from the little ones to grandma, the simplest thing is to get involved. If you participate with everyone, fully understanding why you're doing it, you're sure to have fun. And your children, looking at you, won't be able to resist joining in the fun.

Even if you're tired. This is perfectly natural, after all, you worked all this time before your vacation and maybe just want some peace and quiet.

Then, my recommendation is to do a little family action. A change of scenery and activity is very conducive to relaxation. Give it a try. Especially since it's only for 1-2 hours. And your children will be delighted to have your attention.

I want to tell you what's best for an island photo shoot. What to wear, what to pack, and the best locations for family photos on vacation.

Why Phu Quoc Is Perfect for Family Photos

Phu Quoc Island has a special atmosphere.

Here, you can truly find inner harmony, relax with your family, and see the stars.

Phu Quoc's beaches are very diverse, but they all have everything you need for a perfect tropical holiday with the whole family. There are palm trees, pleasant sand, a gentle slope into the sea (which is important for children), warm turquoise water and some infrastructure with cafes or beach clubs.

Wherever you stay on Long Beach, Ong Lang, Kem Beach, Sao Beach or Starfish Beach, each of them will be an excellent backdrop for your family photos.
And each of the beaches on Phu Quoc Island is beautiful in its own way at sunset.

So, if you can't decide which beach to have your family photo shoot on in Phu Quoc, choose the one closest to your hotel. It's more comfortable for the children. We can take some beautiful group portraits of the whole family at your villa or hotel room, walk around the hotel grounds and gently descend to the nearest beach.

How to Make Kids Happy in Front of the Camera

The secret is simple! Do everything together – it's easy, fun and a little tasty. I already wrote above about having fun with your children.

Snacks and drinks can sometimes solve global mood problems and recharge your little ones with the energy they need.
Always bring something small to snack on.

But since we are on a tropical island, I suggest making snack time part of your family photo shoot.
Sit on the sand right on the beach and drink coconut juice through a straw. It always looks pretty and atmospheric and tropical in photos.

A set of beach toys or an inflatable ball are accessories for a family beach photoshoot and a good way to help children relax.

What time of day should you choose for a photoshoot?
The morning light is soft, and children are usually alert. And the sun isn't too strong yet. So this is a good time if you have small kids.

Late afternoon is also a good time for a family photo shoot. The weather cools down towards evening, and the sea water is warmer. So running along the shore and splashing in the water is pure pleasure. And the main bonus is the sunset. Beach family photos at sunset are a classic holiday content.

I do not recommend taking photos at lunchtime. The result will be sunburn and overheating. Unless you are indoors with air conditioning. And this is also an option if you are celebrating your child's birthday or organising some other family celebration.

What to Wear - Beyond the “All White on the Beach” Rule

You've probably heard the advice that only neutral colours are suitable for the seaside. This is a myth. Yes, white and pastel colours never go out of fashion, but bright colours can look stunning against the backdrop of the blue sea and green palm trees.

Excellent choices include blue, green, yellow, orange, and even pink - the main thing is that the colours are solid or have subtle patterns.

What to avoid are neon shades and very bright red (it tends to ‘vibrate’ in photos), lots of black, and very loud, active geometric patterns.

Think as a group: you don't all have to wear the same clothes. Instead, coordinate them. If dad wears a dark blue shirt, mum wears a light dress with blue accents, and the children wear something soft yellow, the photo will look harmonious but not boring.

Comfort is also important. Flowing dresses, linen shirts, shorts or skirts are clothes that move with the wind. I always recommend walking barefoot on the sand.

Synthetic fabrics in a tropical climate make the body very hot. Instead of enjoying the beach photoshoot, you will be sweating and waiting for it to end. Accordingly, your photos will show these emotions on your face. Do you want photos like this from your holiday? No? Dress comfortably. ;)

When families put a little thought into their outfits, the result is not only stylish, but also tells a whole story. It's stylish and atmospheric. Give it a try.

Accessories That Add Local Flavor

Small details can turn good photos into great ones. Some of my favourite ideas:

Vietnamese conical hats (nón lá): authentic, simple and instantly recognisable. Your photos will immediately show which country you visited for your beach holiday.

Straw hats and umbrellas: practical shade and a charming island look.

Pareos and beach shirts: flowing fabrics that catch the wind add movement and colour. This is the so-called traveller's style, which perfectly emphasises the holiday mood.

Flowers for a photo shoot: even a single orchid stem can make a portrait vibrant. Pin it to your straw hat or hold a bouquet near your face when we take your portrait.

Picnic on the beach: a light blanket, tropical fruits, coconuts and children enjoying slices of watermelon or eating dragon fruit with a spoon. This turns the shoot into a picnic on the sand - fun for the kids and a story in itself.

With these elements, the photos look less ‘staged’ and more like you're just enjoying your family tropical holiday.

Best Spots for a Family Photoshoot

Here are my personal favourite spots in Phu Quoc for a family photo shoot:

Long Beach: golden sand and bright sunsets. Lots of space, beautiful hotels and beach cafés.

Ong Lang Beach: a quiet, charming harbour with beautiful sunsets.

Starfish Beach: shallow water with bright orange starfish (we admire them without touching them).

Sunset Sanato Beach Club: fun art installations that children love to explore.

Khem Beach: white sand, palm tree swings, crystal clear turquoise water during the rainy season.

Grand World Aquarium: glowing tunnels and wide-eyed children watching the fish above them. Here, I feel like a child myself :)

Safari Park and Aquatopia Water Park: genuine laughter, playful energy. Also a good place for a children's photoshoot.

Resorts and villas: tropical gardens, stylish pools, cosy hammocks - the perfect place if you want to stay close to your accommodation. It's comfortable for little ones.

Each place has its own atmosphere, and together we can choose the one that best suits your family.

When to Book a Photoshoot

Honestly, anytime. But here are the moments that families love to photograph the most:

On children's birthdays, cakes and balloons will look even cooler against the backdrop of the sea and tropical greenery. Not as cliché as their classmates' parties.

Anniversaries and other family dates are always more romantic when celebrated during a family holiday. It's a celebration for parents and fun for children.

And if your relatives live in different countries, organise a family reunion on a tropical island. How romantic! You definitely won't be able to do without a family photographer here.

Your first big family holiday, because you will never regret having photos of that first trip to a tropical island.

Sometimes ‘ordinary’ days - such as your child's first swim in the see - make for the most meaningful photos.
