There are as many wedding rituals and traditions in the world as there are nationalities.
Some seem perfectly acceptable to us, while others are ridiculous and absurd. Let's get to know some of them.
Many people have undoubtedly heard of the tradition of tying shoes to wedding cars. But few know where it comes from. The roots of this tradition date back to the time when a wedding began with the bride's father giving the groom her slipper as a symbol of power over the girl. This slipper was supposed to hang above the young family's bed as a constant reminder of the family hierarchy.
Perhaps the funniest tradition exists in the Nicobar Islands. In order for a bride to agree to the marriage, the groom had to work for her for a month, six months, or a year. This way, each girl could determine whether her husband was suitable for her. If the answer was yes, the newlyweds were declared family, and if not, the man went home empty-handed.
The Most Original Wedding Customs in Germany The groom's friends begin celebrating the day before the wedding. They come to the bride's house and spend the entire evening smashing dishes under her windows. This is supposed to bring good luck. Afterward, the bride is obligated to invite the boys to dinner.
Kenyans are required to wear women's clothes for the first month of marriage to understand the wife's burden – admittedly, this is nothing compared to the traditional cross-dressing at home celebrations, the impressions of which are captured in the family's wedding photos!
Remember that in our country, the wedding ceremony cannot take place without rose petals, which the guests sprinkle on the newlyweds? This is a tradition from India meant to protect the family from evil spirits. In Romania, the young couple are showered with nuts and sweets for the same purpose, while Korean weddings include geese and ducks, which are specially brought on the day of the celebration. Here, it is believed that these birds are faithful to each other for life.
Another tradition that has been passed down to us in a modified form is fortune-telling for the next wedding.
Every wedding photographer captures the moment when the young woman throws the bouquet into a crowd of unmarried bridesmaids, and the one who catches it becomes the next bride. In Finland, however, a crown is placed on the bride's head, after which the guests blindfold the bride and dance around her until the bride makes her choice by pointing to one of the bridesmaids.
The saddest weddings have Dagestani girls who are forced to stand in a corner in silence throughout the entire ceremony, only occasionally coming out to meet the guests.
As you can see, there are no limits to the variety of traditions and rituals at weddings. You can choose some of them and incorporate them into the script of your own celebration to make it unforgettable and extravagant.
However, I don't think our brides will stand in a corner the entire evening; they will rather dance with the guests.
