She wasn't expecting a proposal. She wasn't even expecting a photographer.
For her, September 21 was simply an evening with her boyfriend at Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort. They were going for a walk along the beach, enjoying some time together by the sea. But her boyfriend had arranged something she knew nothing about. Professional photographer Eduard Stelmakh was already nearby, sitting at Coral Restaurant like an ordinary guest. He was waiting to photograph the moment when the man would ask her to marry him. The surprise proposal took place during a one-hour photography session, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. It began with the photographer working discreetly from a distance and continued with a relaxed couple photoshoot after the engagement.

A secret proposal that started at Coral Restaurant
The arrangements had been made in advance through WhatsApp. The client and Eduard agreed on the location near Coral Restaurant, the time and how they would communicate on the day. Eduard arrived at the agreed location on time and took his place among the restaurant guests. To anyone nearby, he looked like another visitor spending the evening at Green Bay. Once he was ready, he sent the client a short WhatsApp message confirming he was in position.
The man could now bring his girlfriend to the beach without searching for the photographer or drawing attention to the arrangements.
They walked onto the sand together. Then he took out the engagement ring, got down on one knee and proposed. She had no idea that Eduard was photographing the scene from a distance. The first photographs show the real proposal against the sea, with the beach and surrounding trees forming a beautiful natural setting. Nothing needed to be staged or repeated.
How does a secret proposal photographer stay hidden?
A secret proposal photographer doesn't necessarily have to hide in the bushes. Sometimes the best way to remain unnoticed is to look like everyone else. That was the idea behind Eduard's position at Coral Restaurant. He could wait nearby without looking like a photographer expecting a particular couple.
For the woman, there was no photo session to prepare for. Nobody had asked her to dress for photographs, follow a photographer's directions or stop at a particular place for a portrait. She was simply spending the evening with her boyfriend. This is what separates a completely secret proposal from a surprise arranged during a regular couple photoshoot. In the second scenario, the woman knows she is being photographed but doesn't know about the ring. At Green Bay, she knew about neither.
A hidden photographer has to prepare carefully because the proposal cannot be repeated for a better photograph. Eduard discusses the location, timing and practical details beforehand, then works without interrupting the couple when the proposal begins.
The result is a genuine reaction, photographed as it happens.
How does Eduard recognize the couple and confirm he is ready?
Before arranging a secret proposal, Eduard asks for a recent photograph of the couple. This helps him recognize the right people without approaching them. On a beach or at a busy resort, a photograph can be far more useful than trying to identify someone from a description of their clothes. Just as important is knowing that the photographer has arrived.
Eduard takes punctuality seriously. He makes a point of being at the agreed meeting place on time and letting his clients know he is there. For regular photoshoots, he often sends a quick photograph of himself at the meeting point with a message such as, "I'm already here, waiting for you." t's a thoughtful habit, especially for visitors who have never met their photographer. They know who to look for and don't have to wonder whether they've come to the right place.
For a secret proposal, the confirmation needs to be discreet. At Green Bay, Eduard sent his message through WhatsApp while waiting at the restaurant. Only after receiving it did the client bring his girlfriend to the beach. When you're carrying an engagement ring and trying to keep a surprise, knowing your photographer is already there makes a real difference.
Can you arrange a Secret Proposal through WhatsApp or Email?
Yes. Eduard communicates with clients through both WhatsApp and email, responding promptly whichever option they prefer.
WhatsApp is convenient for quick messages and coordination. But some people would rather use email because their partner might notice a WhatsApp notification or see an unfamiliar conversation on their phone. For the Green Bay proposal, the client chose WhatsApp. They used it to discuss the arrangements beforehand and to confirm that Eduard was ready on the day. For your own proposal, choose the channel that feels more private and convenient. You can also tell Eduard if there are times when receiving messages might give away the surprise. If your evening plans change, you can contact him through the same channel. Clear communication helps everyone stay coordinated without involving your partner in the arrangements.
What happens after the Secret Proposal?
Once the proposal is over, the hidden photography becomes an ordinary couple photoshoot.
That's exactly what happened at Green Bay. The couple stayed on the beach, and Eduard continued photographing them openly.
They walked together along the shoreline, embraced beneath the trees and sat on the beach swings. Later, they relaxed in a large hammock overlooking the sea. There were portraits together, close photographs of the engagement ring and plenty of smiles.
Toward the end of the session, a rainbow appeared over the water. Eduard included it in the photographs, giving the couple another lovely reminder of their evening. The photographs taken after the proposal are an important part of the experience. The couple can enjoy being together while Eduard helps them create a wider collection of portraits.

How much does a Secret Proposal Photoshoot cost in Phu Quoc?
A one-hour session is usually a practical choice when the proposal and the photographs afterward take place around the same beach or resort.
Eduard's current one-hour photography package costs $250 and includes 150 photos.
The package covers the entire hour, not just the few seconds when the ring is presented. It allows time for photographs of the surprise, the couple's reactions and a series of portraits afterward.
Photos are delivered through a private online gallery within 1–2 days, ready to download and share with family and friends.
No deposit or prepayment is required.
For couples who want more time or several photography locations, Eduard also offers longer sessions. Full details are available on the Phu Quoc photography prices page.
Can you add a video Reel to a secret proposal?
Yes. A short vertical Reel can be added to a photography package for $30. Eduard films video clips on his iPhone and edits them into a Reel of up to 60 seconds.
There is one detail worth discussing before the proposal. If Eduard works alone without assistent, so he cannot photograph and film the actual proposal at the same time. If photographs of the ring presentation are your priority, Eduard can concentrate on the proposal itself and record video clips afterward. Your Reel could include a walk along the beach, an embrace, the engagement ring or the two of you enjoying your first photographs together. If you prefer a video of the actual proposal, Eduard can prioritize filming that part and take photographs afterward. In that case, you won't have the same still-photography coverage of the ring presentation. Neither option is complicated, but it's worth making the choice in advance.
The Green Bay proposal featured in this article was photography only. No additional Reel was recorded.
How can you book a photographer for a surprise proposal in Phu Quoc?
You don’t need to arrive with a detailed plan for the photoshoot.
Start by sending Eduard your preferred date, the approximate time, and the location where you’d like to pop the question. Let him know which resort you’re staying at (if applicable), and include a recent photo of you and your partner so he can recognize you. You can coordinate the details privately via WhatsApp or email. Eduard will discuss where he should wait, how to signal that he’s ready, and how you’d like the couple’s photoshoot to proceed after the surprise. He responds to messages personally, so you’ll be communicating directly with the same photographer who will be there to capture your proposal.
Not every couple wants a photographer who remains completely hidden. Another option is to book a standard couple’s photoshoot and then spring the proposal as a surprise. This is how a surprise proposal was arranged on Ong Lang Beach: the woman knew about the photoshoot, but the engagement ring came as a total surprise.
At Green Bay, both the photographer’s presence and the proposal itself were kept entirely secret. Both approaches result in beautiful photographs. The right choice depends on how you envision the evening and what would feel most natural for your partner.
Another option is to book a table at a beachside café with a romantic setting. Many restaurants on the beach offer this. Then propose to your partner during a romantic dinner.
