Eduard Stelmakh is a professional photographer based on Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam. He works with families, couples, honeymooners, travellers and wedding guests from around the world. Eduard's relationship with photography began not with a camera purchase but with a curiosity about light and optics. As a child, he built a working camera obscura from a matchbox - a pinhole device with a precisely sized aperture and black-and-white film inside. It was a small experiment that pointed toward a larger principle: a photograph is not an accident. It is the result of light, form, composition and timing working together.

This underlying understanding of photography as a technical and artistic craft - not just a way to capture moments - is visible in the details of his work. Clean colour. Natural skin tones. Considered geometry in every frame. No heavy filters, no trendy processing that dates the image within a few years. The photographs he produces look good not only today but in ten years.

Before relocating to Southeast Asia, Eduard built a substantial career in studio, wedding, fashion and creative portrait photography. He worked with complex professional flash systems, constructed elaborate setups, studied retouching and advertising aesthetics, and developed the ability to create a single carefully built image — one with an idea, a specific light, a mood, a visual argument.

Clients would sometimes travel specifically to work with him on a single such photograph.

This studio foundation is unusual among photographers who now work primarily outdoors, and it matters more than it might initially seem. A photographer on a beach is not simply someone pointing a camera at a beautiful setting. Understanding how light falls on a face, how to direct posture and hands, how to manage shadow and volume in open sunlight — these are studio skills. They do not come automatically from shooting outdoors.

Eduard brought this technical precision with him when he left the studio. It is still present in every session, even when the setting is a resort garden or a stretch of open beach.

At the height of his career in Eastern Europe, Eduard worked with some of the most recognisable names in Ukrainian and CIS entertainment and media.

His clients included Svetlana Loboda — the Ukrainian singer who went on to build an international career — Potap and Nastya Kamenskikh, one of the most prominent celebrity couples in the region, singer Lama, Ukrainian athlete Denis Silantyev, and performing artist Svetlana Volnova for a women's magazine editorial. He also filmed the band Atmasfera in a studio session.

These were not casual snapshots. The shoot with Potap and Nastya was part of the Moa Fashion Calendar 2011 — a high-production project with a full crew, stylists, assistants and media present. Ukrainian channel M1 broadcast coverage of the session to a national audience.

The Lama shoot was an advertising commission built around a deliberately extreme concept: the singer falling from a great height onto a jaguar. After the production, Eduard was interviewed on television about it.

A creative wedding commission at the industrial Interpipe Steel facility drew its own national broadcast. Ukrainian television covered the shoot and described Eduard as one of the most prominent and creative photographers in Ukraine.

His work also attracted imitation — other photographers in the region attempted to reproduce his creative compositions, which is perhaps the most direct measure of influence a photographer can have on their industry.

A significant chapter in Eduard's professional career was teaching. Over the years, he ran masterclasses and multi-day workshops on lighting, technique, Photoshop, professional workflow and creative photography. The geography of these events is itself a measure of the reach his reputation had built: workshops took place in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Sicily and beyond.

In Poltava, photographers travelled from Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa to attend. In Almaty, tickets for his masterclass were priced at $600 — and sold. In Samsun, Turkey, he ran a practical outdoor workshop for local photographers, shooting in real conditions including light rain. In Sicily, he brought the same approach to an Italian audience.

In Kazakhstan, local television covered his work. He was quickly absorbed into the Almaty show business and fashion photography scene, working with local stars and industry figures from the moment he arrived.

Teaching photography at a serious level requires more than personal skill. It requires the ability to articulate exactly why a decision works — why a specific light angle flatters a face, why one moment in a series is stronger than the others, why a composition holds attention. That process of precise articulation sharpens a photographer's eye in a way that years of solo shooting rarely does.

The list of publications that featured his photography includes: Advanced Photoshop (UK) — his photograph appeared on the magazine's cover; Today's Wedding Fashion (China) — a full editorial feature in both English and Chinese editions; Bridal Empire (interview); Fleur d'Orange (European wedding press); FHOX (Brazil); an Italian photography publication; and a Ukrainian travel newspaper, among others.

His images were selected by international photo agencies and used beyond the editorial world. United Colors of Benetton licensed one of his photographs for a clothing print — the T-shirt was later spotted by friends in a Bangkok Benetton store and photographed. The New York Institute of Photography used one of his stock images in their advertising campaign across the post-Soviet market.

When work travels this far without the photographer actively placing it, it says something specific: the images are strong enough to be useful to others. That is a different kind of credential from a portfolio page or a positive review.

Eduard was also a wedding photographer specializing in on-location photoshoots — he was invited to photograph weddings in locations deemed worthy of the occasion by his clients. These assignments included weddings in Monaco and Cannes, and newlyweds specifically invited Eduard to the French Riviera for their ceremony. He also worked in the Maldives for wedding and love story shoots. Creative and editorial shoots also took him to Italy, including a series of creative photoshoots in Sicily.

After years in Asia, Eduard spent time working in Germany. This period contributed a different sensibility to his work: more attention to the structure of a full series, visual restraint, and a deeper understanding of what European and international clients expect from a professional.

The majority of his clients today come from Europe, the United States, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. These clients value clarity, punctuality and a well-organised process. They want to know what will happen before, during and after the session — and they appreciate working with someone who understands that expectation without being told.

In 2011, Eduard moved to Koh Samui, Thailand. He lived and worked there for nearly seven years, gradually developing his outdoor photography practice alongside his earlier studio experience.

Shooting in the tropics is its own discipline. Direct equatorial sun is harsh and unforgiving. The light changes dramatically within an hour. A beach that is ideal at a specific time of day can be nearly unworkable an hour later. The tide, the wind, the season, the orientation of the shoreline — all of it shapes the final photograph. A photographer who does not understand these variables will struggle to produce consistent results.

The studio training Eduard brought to Koh Samui gave him a technical foundation for working in difficult conditions: not avoiding harsh light but using it, not waiting for ideal conditions but making the available conditions work.
