Interview with Eduard Stelmakh, Professional Photographer in Phu Quoc
Choosing a photographer in Phu Quoc is not only about finding beautiful pictures. For many travellers, it is also about trust, clear communication, natural direction, location advice and knowing that the photoshoot will feel easy during a short holiday.
In this interview, Eduard Stelmakh, a professional photographer based on Phu Quoc Island, talks about how to choose the right photographer, what makes a family or couple vacation photoshoot successful, and what clients should know before booking a photoshoot on the island.
What should people look for when choosing the best photographer in Phu Quoc?
When choosing a photographer, I would first look at the overall visual language of their work. Every photographer has a different way of seeing people, light, movement and emotion. You can feel it in the angles, colors, compositions, facial expressions, editing style and the moments they choose to capture.
Some people prefer bright, joyful, tropical images with a strong vacation feeling. Others love softer colors, more quiet emotions, black and white photographs or a more editorial mood. There is no one perfect style for everyone. People have different visual preferences, so the best photographer for you is the one whose portfolio feels close to your own taste.
A good photographer is not just someone who owns a camera. A professional photographer should have artistic vision, technical skill and the ability to work with very different people. One person, a couple, a small family, a large multigenerational family, children, guests from different countries, different cultures and different personalities.
For me, the best photographer is someone who can combine taste, experience, technical knowledge, calm communication and a consistently high professional standard in any situation.
Some travellers search for the best photographer in Phu Quoc. What does that phrase mean to you?
I am always grateful when clients describe me as one of the best photographers in Phu Quoc. But I do not think trust should be built only on a big phrase.
For me, it means responsibility. People come to Phu Quoc for a few days or weeks, often with their family, children or someone they love. Sometimes it is a rare family gathering, a romantic trip, an anniversary, a proposal or simply an important holiday they want to remember properly.
When someone searches for the best photographer, they are usually not looking for a loud promise. They are looking for confidence. They want to see a consistent portfolio, good taste, clear communication, real client reviews and a feeling that this person can be trusted with an important part of their holiday.
What makes a professional photographer different from someone who simply takes nice pictures?
Professional photography starts with vision, not with the camera. The camera is only a tool. What matters is how the photographer sees the frame, understands light, chooses angles, works with people, builds a complete series and edits the final photographs.
In Phu Quoc, it is easy to think that a beautiful beach is enough. In reality, the same beach can look completely different depending on the season, time of day, weather, tide, wind and light. A professional photographer should know how to work not only with the location, but also with the people in front of the camera.
This is especially important for family and couple photoshoots. The final result depends on atmosphere, trust, timing and the photographer’s ability to guide people naturally. A professional should be able to create strong images not only in perfect conditions, but also when children are tired, the sun is bright, the wind is strong, the location is busy or the schedule changes.
How did your experience in Europe influence your photography?
My experience in Europe influenced both my visual taste and the way I work with clients. It taught me to pay attention to composition, details, timing and the overall feeling of a series, not only to individual beautiful frames.
It also shaped my approach to communication. International clients usually appreciate clarity, punctuality and a calm process. They want to understand what will happen before, during and after the photoshoot. I try to make the experience simple, respectful and well organized from the first message to the final gallery.
Many of my clients in Phu Quoc come from Europe, the United States, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and other countries. For them, the photoshoot is part of their holiday, so it should feel comfortable, professional and easy.
How would you describe your photography style?
For family and couple photoshoots in Phu Quoc, I would describe my style as natural lifestyle photography with a polished, carefully guided approach.
I like when people look alive, joyful, beautiful and real in the photographs. This works especially well for family holidays, resort photoshoots, beach sessions, children, couples and relaxed time together. I do not want a family photoshoot to feel like a stiff formal session.
At the same time, I do not leave clients alone in front of the camera. I guide them gently, suggest simple movements, help with posing and create a rhythm where people can relax. The goal is to keep real emotion and connection, while still making the photographs look clean, flattering and professional.
I also love photography in many different forms. I have experience with commercial, fashion-style and creative photoshoots, and I enjoy working with different visual ideas. But for family and couple vacation photoshoots in Phu Quoc, the most natural approach is usually light, warm, lifestyle-oriented and emotionally real.
Why is local experience important for a photoshoot in Phu Quoc?
Local experience is very important in Phu Quoc because the island only looks simple from the outside. In reality, there are many details that are difficult to understand during a short visit.
The east coast and the west coast of the island are very different. Some places look beautiful in one season and much less suitable in another. Light, wind, water, beach condition and crowds can all change the result.
There are also simple geographic details. For example, you cannot photograph a sunset over the sea on the east coast of the island because that side is oriented differently. This may not be obvious to a visitor, but it matters a lot when planning a photoshoot.
A photographer who lives and works in Phu Quoc can give recommendations based on the client’s hotel, date, season, family size, children, preferred style and the real conditions at that time. This helps avoid mistakes and makes the whole photoshoot more relaxed.
What are your favorite locations for photoshoots in Phu Quoc?
I usually divide photoshoot locations in Phu Quoc into several types.
The first type is urban and architectural locations. At the moment, Sunset Town and Grand World work very well for this. They are colorful, bright and visually different from a simple beach setting. They have architecture, streets, bridges, stairs, decorative elements and many interesting backgrounds. These locations can be great for couple photoshoots, individual portraits, travel-style images and clients who want more variety.
The second type is hotels and resorts. For family and couple photoshoots, this is often the most convenient and visually clean choice. Phu Quoc does not yet have many public beaches that are beautifully organized for photography in terms of background, comfort and details. Hotel beaches often look better in photographs because they usually have well-kept gardens, clean paths, architecture, beach bars, palm trees, light sand and a more polished resort-style atmosphere.
The third type is natural beach locations. In general, Khem Beach, Bai Dai Beach, Long Beach, Ong Lang Beach, Sao Beach and Vinh Dam Beach can all work for photoshoots. But I always look at the season, weather, beach condition, time of day and where the client is staying.
I do not choose a location only because it is popular. I choose it for a specific story, whether it is a family with children, a couple, a romantic walk, a colorful travel-style photoshoot, a quiet resort portrait session or a bright tropical beach story.
How do you help clients choose the right location?
First, I look at where the client is staying. In many cases, the hotel or resort is already the best choice for the photoshoot. It is convenient, beautiful and does not require extra travel, which is especially important for families with children.
If the client wants a public location such as Sunset Town, Grand World, another beach or a place with installations and a special view, I explain the practical details. Phu Quoc is a large island, so we need to think about transfer time, heat, children’s schedules, comfort and the rhythm of the day.
Sometimes travelling to another location gives a more interesting and varied result. But sometimes the smartest choice is to stay at the hotel or nearby and create a calm, beautiful photoshoot without spending energy on the road.
My goal is not just to suggest a beautiful place. My goal is to help choose the right place for this particular family, couple, date and style.
What are the most popular photoshoots in Phu Quoc?
In Phu Quoc, the most popular sessions are family and couple photoshoots during a holiday. I would call them family and couple vacation photoshoots because the travel context is very important.
People come here to rest, spend time at the beach, enjoy their hotel, celebrate time with children or travel with someone they love. They want photographs that feel connected to this experience.
Family vacation photoshoots are especially popular because Phu Quoc is a very family-friendly island. Couple photoshoots are also common for honeymoons, anniversaries, romantic trips, proposals or simply a beautiful holiday together.
So vacation photography is not a separate genre instead of family or couple photography. It is the context. A vacation photoshoot can be a family session, a couple session, an individual portrait session or a photoshoot connected to a special moment.
Why are family photoshoots so popular on Phu Quoc Island?
I think one of the reasons is that Phu Quoc is very comfortable for family holidays. Many beaches have light sand, a gentle entrance to the sea, a relaxed resort atmosphere and many hotels where families can stay comfortably with children.
Phu Quoc is also a place where large families often gather. Relatives may come from different countries, choose one resort and spend time together for New Year, an anniversary, a birthday or a rare family holiday. Multigenerational family photoshoots are very meaningful because parents, children, grandparents, brothers, sisters and relatives may all be together in one place, even if they normally live far from each other.
In this situation, a family photoshoot is not just a set of pretty beach pictures. It becomes a memory of the time when everyone was together.
What makes a couple photoshoot in Phu Quoc feel natural?
For a couple photoshoot, it is important not to make people act like someone else. Not everyone feels comfortable posing, and that is completely normal.
I usually build the session around simple actions. Walking, looking at each other, touching, talking, laughing, moving, holding hands. I guide the couple, but I try not to break the natural connection between them.
Phu Quoc works beautifully for couple photography because of the island itself. Light sand, turquoise water in many shallow beach areas, palm trees close to the shore, tropical greenery and open space create the kind of atmosphere people come here for.
I also do not think that sunset is the only good time for photos. Evening light can be beautiful, of course, but morning can give a fresh and clean feeling. Under the right conditions, the afternoon can create bright, vivid, tropical images with strong color, sparkling water and a real resort mood.
What if people feel uncomfortable in front of the camera?
This is very common. Many clients tell me before the photoshoot that they do not know how to pose or that they are not photogenic. I see this as completely normal.
You do not need to know what to do in advance. That is my job. I explain where to stand, how to turn, what to do with your hands, where to look and how to move.
I do not ask people to suddenly become models. I start with simple directions, help them feel safe and gradually make the process easier. After a little time, most people stop thinking so much about the camera. That is when the most natural and beautiful photographs usually happen.
How long does a photoshoot usually take?
Most photoshoots take one or two hours.
A one-hour session works well for a smaller photoshoot in one main location. It is a good option for a couple or a small family who wants a beautiful, simple and not too long session.
A two-hour session is usually more comfortable, especially for families, larger groups or clients who want more variety. There is no need to rush. We have time for full family photos, children’s portraits, parents’ portraits, couple photos, different areas of the hotel, the garden, the beach and a more relaxed rhythm.
If the family is large, if there are young children or if the client wants to combine several moods and locations, two hours usually gives a calmer and more complete result. Longer photoshoots are also possible when the client wants a fuller story, several locations or a slower pace.
How much does a photoshoot in Phu Quoc cost?
The price depends on the duration, package, number of edited photographs and the type of photoshoot. I try to make the packages clear, so clients understand what is included and what result they will receive.
The current photoshoot packages and prices are available here.

If a client is not sure which package to choose, they can send me their hotel name, date, number of people and the type of photoshoot they want. I can then suggest the most suitable option.
When will clients receive their photos?
After the photoshoot, I upload the photographs to a private online gallery. The client can view the full selection and choose their favorite images for retouching.
I like this approach because every person has their own favorite moments, expressions and emotions. What is emotionally important to the client is not always something the photographer can choose alone.
Depending on the package, the client selects a certain number of photographs for editing. For example, a one-hour photoshoot includes 30 edited photos, a two-hour photoshoot includes 60 edited photos, and so on.
The edited photographs are usually ready within 1-2 days after the client’s selection. They are delivered in the same private online gallery, where they can be downloaded in high quality or shared with family and friends.
The client also receives access to all good photos from the session in the gallery. This gives more freedom and makes the final choice more personal.
Where can clients read reviews before booking?
Reviews are very important, especially when someone is choosing a photographer from another country. A portfolio shows the visual style, but reviews show the real client experience.
They help people understand how the photoshoot feels, how the photographer communicates, how comfortable the process is, how the photographer works with children and whether clients are happy with the final result.
A selection of client reviews is available on my website.
Clients can also find feedback on Google Maps, Tripadvisor and social media. I think it is useful to look at both the photographs and the reviews before booking. Together, they give a much clearer idea of what to expect.
I noticed you also have an extensive wedding portfolio. Was wedding photography an important part of your work?
Yes, wedding photography was an important part of my work for several years. It is a very strong school for a photographer because weddings teach you to work with people, emotions, timing, light, family dynamics and moments that cannot be repeated.
Today in Phu Quoc, my main focus is family and couple vacation photoshoots. This is what many travellers come to the island for. Family holidays, children, couples, anniversaries, proposals, romantic trips and large family gatherings are very common here.
But the wedding experience still helps me a lot. It taught me to guide people calmly, notice emotional moments, react quickly and create a complete story, not only separate portraits.
What would you say to someone choosing a photographer in Phu Quoc right now?
I would suggest choosing a photographer not only by price or one beautiful image. Look at the overall style, full galleries, colors, angles, mood, reviews, communication and whether the photographer’s way of seeing people feels close to you.
A good photoshoot during a holiday should not feel stressful. It should become a pleasant part of the trip. You should understand where the photoshoot will take place, how long it will last, what you will receive, when the photographs will be ready and how the whole process will feel.
If you are planning a family or couple photoshoot in Phu Quoc, it is better to contact me in advance. Then we can calmly choose the date, time, location and package that will work best for your holiday.
